NEED Project

The NEED project on sustainable nanoelectronics will develop methodologies applied to advanced research integrating the economic analysis, the geopolitics issues, the acceptability and the durability of new technological solutions.
It will develop a global to IoT product design regarding their components, technological processes and innovation mananagement (methodologies) to avoid future supply disruption of key materials, changes of regulations, and value changes of raw materials.

The NEED project will meet several challenges in the design field by materials substitution or replacement for IoT applications and in using alternative physical principles to realize already existing functions while using sustainable approaches. In this perspective, the project will serve four main priorities :

  • proposing a precise risks identification in the IoT emerging devices supply chain,
  • replacing the most critical elements (i.e. noble metals) by more abundant or disruptive ones to execute the same function,
  • reducing consumption of critical elements or recovering them during the manufacturing cycle (rare earths, etc.),
  • implementing alternative physical principles to realize already existing functions while using sustainable approaches.
